A water softener is a product that reduces hardness causing minerals from your water, such as calcium and magnesium. These minerals are what cause limescale build up on your surfaces and inside your pipes. Hard water is common in cities, areas with hot weather, and low rainfall will have high mineral content. Not sure if you have hard water? Look inside your kettle – if it is covered in something that looks like dirty wet chalk, you might have hard water deposits.
Other ways to see that your home has hard water is by checking to see if you have white deposits on your dishes, limescale build up in your dishwasher or other water using appliances. A salt based softener will reduce the minerals before the water is run through your home system. This results in a great limescale prevention system helping reduce the rings in your bathtubs, build up in your iron, spots on your dishes, and more.
Water filter systems will use many ways to filter the water in your home, but the most common is from Reverse Osmosis. The type of water filtration will depend on the same things a water softener does; where you live, if you use well or city water, etc. Depending on the water filter it can reduce more than just calcium; it will also prevent limescale and reduces metal contaminants like arsenic, iron or coper. They can also help reduce pharmaceutical and industrial byproducts like pesticide and hormones. With Reverse Osmosis systems they are smaller products that will filter and point-of-use (a kitchen faucet).
With each of these focusing on different solutions to water related issues, deciding on a filter or softener would depend on your water. If limescale buildup is a large whole home problem for you – that’s a sign of hard water and a water softener will alleviate those issues. If your water tastes or smells strange, a water filter would me more effective to your point of use water consumption.
