Water Softener Myths: What our customers get wrong

Take the first step to Softer water

18th September 2020

Water softeners are known to have a great impact on your household. However, there are some myths that people choose to believe about water softening that are either misinterpretations or simply not true.

Let’s discover the truth about installing a water softener and fight against these water softener myths together.

Water Softener Myth #1 - Water softeners gives you purified water

Water softeners are designed to reduce water hardness by removing calcium and magnesium from water. These are minerals that can cause a lot of problems throughout your home, from kitchens to bathrooms to laundry. This means that water softeners do not filter out ALL minerals, however. When people hear water, softeners remove calcium and other hard water minerals, they believe nutrients are being taken away by the process. After all, magnesium and calcium can help maintain bone health. So, it’s best to get good water before you can have great water.

Water Softener Myth #2 – Soft water on skin: Slimy texture

Soft water on skin when you shower Some of our customers notice a difference on their skin when they first get used to showering with soft water. They say it feels “slimy” as it leaves a film on their skin.

This is not true, and it isn’t soap that doesn’t wash away either. This is the opposite of what really happens, as when you have hard water it leaves soap scum on your skin which can make your skin dry and dull. What you notice when you shower with hard water is that you’re not getting that clean feeling, but instead you’re covered in a sticky residue.

The smooth feel of your skin when you shower with soft water is your own natural oils, and this is how it’s supposed to feel! This feeling is what you’re looking for, rather than the sticky soap scum skin feeling resulting from hard water.

Water Softener Myth #3 – Water softeners waste too much water

This could be true: some water softeners can waste water and salt during the regeneration process. Hague Quality Water’s water softeners are much more efficient than conventional water softener systems. They use the right amount of water to give you soft water without wasting resources thanks to the directional flow screens, which enables the proper use of fine mesh resin to reduce water hardness.

Water Softener Myth #4 - Water Softeners makes water taste salty

water softener myth that water tastes funny Easy mistake for people to make, but you’re not drinking salt water if you install a water softener in your home. Water softeners require salt, but you shouldn’t be able to taste it when you’re drinking.

Water softeners from Hague are packed with resin beads, meaning your hard water flows through the resin and—in a process called ion exchange—trades places with sodium ions via the resin beads. This means that it’s not salt (NaCL) that gets to your water, it’s sodium (Na).

It’s worth noting that not everyone likes the taste of softened water, but they don’t want to deal with hard water problems either. If you’re in this predicament, you can either:

  • Separate your tap when choosing between drinking and cooking
To get all the advantages soft water brings to your home including cleaning, bathing and laundry.
  • Installing a seperate drinking water system
To give you sodium free drinking water that is straight from a faucet at your sink.
