You will never permanently remove hardness from your water, but you can reduce hardness tremendously by using a water softener to soften your water throughout your home. Build up and lime scale occur naturally in your home and hard water is to blame.
As water travels in the ground it picks up whatever it meets, such as minerals and rocks. Once the water reaches your homes pipes the minerals it’s bringing with it can include Calcium, Magnesium, Iron, Copper, and more. Hard water can cause big problems over time for your water using household appliances such as:
Hard water leads to lime scale buildup which can cause white residue build-up that is hard to clean, causes rust, failure to heat pumps, failure to heating elements, and more.
If you already suspect you have hard water, you probably do. You can try a simple at home soap lather test to see if you have hard water. This water hardness test is simple and very easy to do with items you already have at home. First, fill a clean bottle about halfway with water. Add in a few drops of liquid soap, soap with no scents or dyes, such as Castile soap. Shake the bottle vigorously.
If you have sudsy bubbly water, chances are you have soft water. If you have cloudy milky water and dull bubbles most likely you have hard water. After this test, if you suspect you have hard water you can get a more accurate and in-depth Water Hardness Test Kit at any home improvement store to check the accurate hardness of your water. You can also find a water softener dealer in your area who would make an appointment to test your water at home as well and give you many options as to improve your water.
